Rusk County
Historical Commission

County Historical Commissions (CHCs) were created by the Texas Legislature to assist local commissioners courts and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) in the preservation of each county's historic and cultural resources.

The mission of the Rusk County Historical Commission is to protect and preserve the county's historical resources for the use, education, enjoyment, and economic benefit of present and future generations.

Rusk County owns the property and structures that include the museum and grounds of the Rusk County History Center. The CHC oversees the operations of the museum, and the Rusk County Historical Foundation, a separate 501(c)(3) non-profit, is tasked with raising money for new projects, programs, and activities.

If you need genealogical information for family research or Rusk County history, we have a building full of information. Our research center is open on Wednesdays from 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. The phone number there is 903-657-2261. Email the Historical Commission at historicalcommission@ruskcountytx.gov.

We have a new building!

This photograph of our old cabin-style research center doesn’t fully show the deterioration over the years. It has now been replaced with a new building that is still being constructed. Our ever-growing collection of Rusk County historical and genealogical information has a new home, but we still need your financial support to complete this project.
