Oil Derrick

Don’t forget to look up.

  • The discovery of oil in East Texas was one of the most important events in Rusk County history. The steam powered drilling rig was popular in the early days of the East Texas oilfield. It was powered by wood that heated water in the large boiler and turned it into steam.

  • The oil derrick and pumping jack were restored and erected on the Depot grounds in 2001. Click here to learn more about the history.
