The Beall-Ross “Dog Trot” House

  • This particular architectural style, with the open hall through the center of the house, was popular from 1850 to 1900. The hall made the house cooler in the summer.

  • The Beall-Ross Home was built in 1884 by R. A. Beall. Two of the brothers who founded Beall's Department Store were born in the dog trot structure. The Ross family bought the house and surrounding farm land in 1903. Three generations of James Manning Ross's descendents lived in the farm house at Church Hill. The home was donated to the Museum in 1989. Click here for more history.
