Early Highways of Rusk County

One of the earliest highway maps for Rusk County provides a detailed look not only at the extant roads but also some idea of where early homesteads were found. This 1936 map from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) is an excellent snapshot of how residents of the time connected and the importance of smaller communities to commerce and agriculture.

Click on the map to connect with an image at the TSLAC that will allow you to zoom in with great detail. You can also download the map for even greater control over the way you view the map. For comparison, here is a 1958 highway map from the Portal to Texas History and a 1972 highway map from TSLAC. Happy travels!
